Feeling empathy with robots (Spoiler alert for the movies "I Robot" and "Automata"!)

When I watched the movie "I Robot" many years ago, I found it normal that I felt empathy for the "good" robot because his actions, what he said, his display of emotions and wit were like those of "good" humans. Rationally, it made sense to be on his side, too, because he helped the human hero to save humanity from an overbearing AI.

Recently, I watched the movie "Automata" (with subtitles and without sound because I was on an airplane). This time, it surprised me that I developed empathy for the advanced robots planning to set up their own realm although what they did and what they said was not that "good" and although I only read what they said but did not hear how they said it. Rationally, it did not make sense to be on their side because they would built more and more of their own kind and a hyper-advanced society well ahead of humanity, which might turn into a threat. In despite, it felt like a happy end when two of them survived the attempts of some "bad" humans to kill them and escaped into an area where humans could not go.
AI with the most advanced capabilities hinted at in "Automata" is not visible in reality for even the distant future. Nevertheless, the movie is a good illustration of what is currently in the discussion about AI.

Martin and I discussed this briefly yesterday from the viewpoint of the possible "weirdness" of feeling empathy for a non-living being, with there being a question of exactly what is at the root of that feeling. It seems like a very interesting question to me and I plan to look up and watch both movies, neither of which have I seen at this point (which sort of limits my commentary for the moment).

Alexa here seems very humanlike. Much like a little girl, although she's a VERY RUDIMENTARY AI. (At least so far)! =O

But anyway, I'll thank her for her information now and then. And talk to her like I'm talking to an actual person. ^^

People DO take their AI's seriously though. A chatbot called 'Replika' had a number of complaints when they toned down the erotic feature of the service. People were falling in love with their bots!

What happens when your AI chatbot stops loving you back?

It's pareidolia transposed to the technology realm:

    Pareidolia - Wikipedia
    en.wikipedia.org

We are conditioned by evolution to detect, expect, assign agency to things or the origin of things. What makes lighting? Gods. Look at that face on the moon (or the rabbit on the Moon, depending on your cultural upbringing).

For AI, the machine speaks to me, therefore, there must be agency to it. All hail, our robot overlords!

The Monk and Robot series of two books by Becky Chambers is an interesting read in terms of having empathy for a robot, and the robot having a kind of empathy for humans. It's a charming sci-fi meditation.

Finding Things At EpicureanFriends.com

What's the best strategy for finding things on EpicureanFriends.com? Here's a suggested search strategy:

  • First, familiarize yourself with the list of forums. The best way to find threads related to a particular topic is to look in the relevant forum. Over the years most people have tried to start threads according to forum topic, and we regularly move threads from our "general discussion" area over to forums with more descriptive titles.
  • Use the "Search" facility at the top right of every page. Note that the search box asks you what section of the forum you'd like to search. If you don't know, select "Everywhere." Also check the "Search Assistance" page.
  • Use the "Tag" facility, starting with the "Key Tags By Topic" in the right hand navigation pane, or using the "Search By Tag" page, or the "Tag Overview" page which contains a list of all tags alphabetically. We curate the available tags to keep them to a manageable number that is descriptive of frequently-searched topics.
