    Over the last ten days with help from Remus and others, we've added a significant number of new quiz questions to the quiz section. There are three new basic sets of questions on Epicurean Canonics, Physics, and Ethics, and the "Norman DeWitt's Epicurus and His Philosophy" quiz is also new. I think most of the questions are pretty good, and I am confident that the answers are pretty close to correct, but before we let these get too far out into the wild it would be helpful if our regulars go through these and see if they disagree with any of the question/answer combinations.

    I am learning that developing multiple-choice questions is something of an art, and we'll continue to appreciate volunteer assistance for developing new ones.

    I checked out the Ethics one. My suggestions/observations:

    - in question about fears change 'which irrational fears' to '... fear(s)'. Otherwise you already suggest more than one fear which makes majority of options apparently incorrect

    - there are 2 questions in a row about categories of desires which are almost identical

    - these are followed by another asking about how many categories there are. The correct answer is set to 4. If I'm wrong, ignore this one, but I always thought there are 3: natural and necessary, natural but unnecessary and empty ones

    Well, I thought, why not to check the remaining two as well?

    I didn't see anything wrong with the canonics one.

    Physics one is my favourite of the three but I have few suggestions:

    - there are two very similar questions about these topics: shapes of the atoms, the swerve, and nature of atomic motion - please consider removing 3 repetitive ones

    - in the question about the number of different shapes of the atoms (the first one on the topic) two answers may be correct: 'uncountable' is set as the correct one but I don't see how 'finite' is wrong

    - in question 12 (if I remember correctly) there's a typo in one of the answers. 'atoms and either' probably should be 'atoms and ether'

    The question "What is the primary cause of atomic motion?" does not make much sense in Epicurean physics. "Atomic weight" as the answer is wrong because there is no primary cause since the atoms have already been in motion since an eternity in Epicurean physics.

    Certainly true! I selected "uncountable" and never read to "uncountable but not infinite." At least I think that is what happened. That was my only issue -- great quiz!

Finding Things At EpicureanFriends.com

What's the best strategy for finding things on EpicureanFriends.com? Here's a suggested search strategy:

  • First, familiarize yourself with the list of forums. The best way to find threads related to a particular topic is to look in the relevant forum. Over the years most people have tried to start threads according to forum topic, and we regularly move threads from our "general discussion" area over to forums with more descriptive titles.
  • Use the "Search" facility at the top right of every page. Note that the search box asks you what section of the forum you'd like to search. If you don't know, select "Everywhere." Also check the "Search Assistance" page.
  • Use the "Tag" facility, starting with the "Key Tags By Topic" in the right hand navigation pane, or using the "Search By Tag" page, or the "Tag Overview" page which contains a list of all tags alphabetically. We curate the available tags to keep them to a manageable number that is descriptive of frequently-searched topics.
