I just received this bust from an Etsy seller, Kargar, owner of Selfix3D.

Brilliant! Thank you for sharing! I search etsy occasionally for new busts -- but this one got past me until now.

I noticed that most of the other statues offered from the same shop have pupils. I have struggled to paint them on other busts, so I asked the shop if they could add pupils to this bust. They said they could and gave this from their program as a sample; so be aware of this option. We'll see how it turns out.

I added a bit of paint, but sticking to gold/bronze/silver turned him into a bit of a ghost, so I'll try again with more realistic colors.

Bryan ...Just an idea...you could go with a solid color all over (either solid gold or medium gray (repainted) ....then you could use a "dry-brush" to lightly skim (with very little paint) or a lightly dabbed sea sponge (or any sponge with even texture) to touch on only the raised areas of the sculpture, using a much lighter color of gold (or a white if using gray as the base)... which would leave the recessed areas unpainted, and so that the lighter color would be contrasting with the darker tones in the deeper sections, and it would highlight the 3-dimensional sculpted form by creating more contrast with the light and shadow.

I like it like that. He looks like a ginger vampire and that explains a lot about his philosophy. Firstly, everyone knows that gingers have no soul so it's clear that Epicurus got jealous and depreciated the importance of soul's existence. Secondly, gray skin is a sign of anemia. Let's face it - he asked for it. He thought bread and water could produce the highest pleasure. He obviously sucked at being a vampire since he didn't know about the benefits of drinking the blood of virgins.

I ordered another one of these, but they refunded the order and now seem to have shut down the whole shop.

    Geez! This keeps happening.

I've managed to find a few of the 3-D printing .stl files. Not for this one (which I believe you can purchase elsewhere for $19.99), but I have three [1] Metródōros at Athens Archaeological Museum, [2] Epíkouros at the British Museum, and [3] the Double with Epíkouros and Metrodorus from the Vatican. They're just under 150 MBs together, in case anyone has a 3-D printer.

I'd like to get one and experiment, but it's not in my cards at the moment.

    Here is digital retouching :saint:

Bryan just an idea...you could do a thin wash of a very diluted gold over the silver and bronze areas, and your end result would be a lighter gold tone over the skin and a darker gold for his hair, (while keeping the clothing the same color as it is).

Try your local public library. They'll often have them in their maker spaces and print files for patrons.

A shop on Etsy sells more "authentic" copies of some busts of Epicurus made of marble. Though they are quite pricy. I have one.

I chose the faux-bronze looking one on the left. Though, I might order the marble one with the rounded base.

I can't justify the decisions made here, although I was thinking of those processional roads with flanking identical herms/statues.

Finding Things At EpicureanFriends.com

What's the best strategy for finding things on EpicureanFriends.com? Here's a suggested search strategy:

  • First, familiarize yourself with the list of forums. The best way to find threads related to a particular topic is to look in the relevant forum. Over the years most people have tried to start threads according to forum topic, and we regularly move threads from our "general discussion" area over to forums with more descriptive titles.
  • Use the "Search" facility at the top right of every page. Note that the search box asks you what section of the forum you'd like to search. If you don't know, select "Everywhere." Also check the "Search Assistance" page.
  • Use the "Tag" facility, starting with the "Key Tags By Topic" in the right hand navigation pane, or using the "Search By Tag" page, or the "Tag Overview" page which contains a list of all tags alphabetically. We curate the available tags to keep them to a manageable number that is descriptive of frequently-searched topics.
