1795–1852. Born in Scotland, active mainly in the United States. Wrote in English. Social reformer, abolitionist, and writer whose novel A Few Days in Athens (1822) dramatizes and defends Epicurean philosophy against the stock ancient criticisms leveled at it, presenting Epicurus's own school in a sympathetic, humanizing light for a 19th-century readership.
