65–8 BC. Born at Venusia, active mainly at Rome. Wrote in Latin. A major poet who playfully describes himself as "a hog from Epicurus's herd" (Epicuri de grege porcum, Epistles I.4.16) and whose odes and satires repeatedly draw on Epicurean ethical themes -- seizing the day, the natural limits of desire, and freedom from the anxieties of ambition and wealth.
