Epicurean music

  • I remember we had created an epicurean playlist of all the types of music that modern epicureans love and appreciate. I wonder if we could re-create that for this forum. Unless it already exists and I’m just not seeing it.

Either way, it might be fun to reignite that discussion.

  • Oh absolutely right LD, that would be a GREAT thing to do. I think we originally did that before Nate was involved, and Nate certainly would have lots of good insight. Let me find the original thread --

  • OK I am pretty sure that THIS is the thread on youtube that you were referring to. In all honesty I was never really happy with it, because we have such a wide mixture of musical genres included that I suspect we dissatisfy everyone. We probably need to make several lists breaking it down by genres. I presume that Epicurean-theme words is important for some, but for other genres there may not even be any words at all.

How could we do it by genre? "Traditional" vs "urban" probably doesn't cut it. Suggestions for
categories? You'll see what I mean when you review the playlist -->

  • Yes, that playlist is in need of some altering.

I think Classical should be a genre that is commonly accepted. Such as the Four Seasons by Vivaldi or The Planets by Holst.

In particular I would put forth Ambient music that is particularly good for contemplation of nature (I.e. stargazing or beach combing) there’s a good amount of Space Ambient music out there, the kind you might hear in an observatory while stargazing. Or Bio-Ambient that evokes a feeling of being in the forest.

As always, I submit the works of Vangelis as a great Hellenic contribution to modern music. Especially his Heaven and Hell album (as used in Cosmos), the Albedo 0.39 album, and the Soul Festivities album that features bio-ambient noises that accompany the music.

  • Except for the details of the suggestions, which I don't know music well enough to have suggested, that is very much consistent with my own thoughts.

I am fine with putting together several separate lists composed of different cultural traditions which communicate "happiness" to different types of people, but mixing them all together in a single playlist is pretty much guaranteed to be "less than optimal" to everyone :)

I will tag Elli because she has had lots of good suggestions and would no doubt agree that we need to redo and divide the project into several lists!

  • I am really not ancient *yet* but I freely admit that I am so far out of touch with popular culture that i cannot even name the categories, much less know what the names mean. But the Classical / Ambient that you mentioned seem like the obvious choices to me. I know that Elli regularly posts to the piano piece about "the heart asks pleasure first." I am not sure that fits either classical or ambient but things like that need a class too. No doubt "movie music" would probably come to mind too.

This one needs to be included if for nothing other than its name (but the music is great too):

  • I would appreciate it! I hate seeing my own icon as the primary one creating new threads ;) My goal is to see lots of new icons / people all the time ;)

  • I’m going to be having some downtime over the next couple of weeks as I recuperate from an ankle surgery tomorrow. So you’ll probably see my icon more often. Ha!

  • Well i am sorry about the ankle surgery but that's great news for the rest of us if you have time to spend here thinking of new threads and things to talk about! ;)

  • Absolutely, We’ll see if we can ignite more discussion and activity here.

Maybe we’ll rival the Facebook page’s activity? Probably wishful thinking....8o

  • You know I think about that a lot. I don't think we ever want to sacrifice quality for quantity, and I don't want to get to the point where we have to wield the ban hammer too often to get rid of trolls.

So far that question has been answered for us, in that we don't seem to come up on any search engines, so most of the people who have found us have come here probably from channels that are friendly already.

But making the forum more "visible" to the outside world is certainly an issue to pursue.
