Forum Categories Update

Attempting to keep the forum organized where posts are findable is a never-ending task. We've made some more updates to forum structure today with a goal (admittedly arbitrary!) that there be no more than 15 items in any category. That means at the top level there will be no more than 14 forums, and each subforum will have no more than 15 subcategories - we will group categories together anytime they exceed 15 in number. This is to prevent interminable scrolling in any one listing.

The forum software is very good at making automatic adjustments, but one downside of forum reorganization is that existing links can break. If you run into broken links let us know here in this thread and we'll fix them as quickly as possible.

At present, the top level structure of the forum will be:

I notice that "Epicurean Places of Interest, History, and Culture" is now filed under "Epicurean Lifestyle and Practical Applications" ...so not very easy to find now.

Perhaps there is a fix for that?

Has anyone seen any studies or well-founded recommendations on how many items in a list can be comfortably handled at one time? I am thinking i have hear recommendations as to how long a list of things is manageable, but maybe that's in relation to how high crows seem to be able to count rather than humans

At the moment I think we should enforce a limit of 15 categories in any single forum list, and if we get up to 15 we combine one or more of the others so that the number never gets higher than 15.

But it's possible that it would be better for the number to be 10 or less.

Anyone have any ideas or links or "gut feels" as to how long a list can be before it becomes too irritating to scroll through?

I take the stand that setting a specific number like that will lead to problems with correctly filing things.

I can understand Cassius 's urge to keep the subtopics under control.

My hesitation is that you might get more top-level divisions with some only having two or three subheadings.

Today, both Cassius and I made a few more minor revisions on the Forum Board List:

...and "Epicurean Lifestyle" is now filed under "Ethics" ...and I think it's looking pretty tight and tidy!

Notice for registered members:

As per Cassius' request, I have both moved and re-ordered some sub-forums.

In these two forums especially you will notice some significant differences:

Our ongoing primary mission continues forward: "To provide a online home for the study and promotion of the philosophy of Epicurus"!

As i understand it nothing has been deleted, just rearranged so that posts that are more 'personal' are now more likely to be in a "non-public" section.

Over the years we've accumulated many posts on many topics, some of which are not really related to the purpose that non-members here would have in coming to the forum to get basic info on Epicurus. This rearrangement should make it easier for non-members to find the material they are looking for among the large numbers of posts and forums.

Also, posts which are "extra-curricular".

[Edit note, 5:37pm ET: For clarity, I should say "advanced material" which goes above and beyond the expected comprehension of Epicurean philosophy, such as interior decorating or making pencil sketches of Epicurus.]

For Epicurean symbolism in literature, the place for it will be here or here.
