...of course, we know it's actually axial tilt, however, that fact was unclear to Epíkouros. Several of the hypotheses assume the seasons to be caused by a change in the position(s) of the sun, as opposed to the Earth. Still, in the Epistle to Pythokles, Epíkouros provides a variety of hypotheses to explain the seasonal "turning of the sun", either by "a slanting of heaven", or "then again" also "in respect of displaced air or even of a suitable matter" (10.94). Otherwise, it may be related to the changes of seasonal sunshine if the celestial bodies "pass across some of [their] positions earlier or late" (10.98). Without additional evidence, he supposed several explanations, so long as we reject "the contrivances of the deplorable astrologers".
Anyway, while the "seasons" are obviously caused by natural cycles and material phenomena, I meant to make a play on the "Jesus Is..." idiom I've been seeing (far too often...). He wasn't the first "son of (a) god" to have experienced "rebirth". I made myself a sweater to combat the false depictions of deities that overwhelm us around this time of year. ![]()
