In Epicurean philosophy the study of natural physics was seen as a method to remove the fear of the gods, through the understanding of the causes of things.
What was once called "natural physics" is now in our time of the 21st Century "natural science", and is has developed into a very high degree of sophistication and complexity. Here is a link to a Wikipedia outline of natural science.
I can see another benefit of the study of natural science: when we look out onto the world and focus our attention outward, we in turn take our attention away from unnecessary, empty, and vain opinions (modern advertizing and images on the internet) brought forward by others which still echo inside our minds.
When combined with actions which support our necessary suffiency in life, the study of nature is a worthwhile activity.
