I’ve been looking at the quote from Tusculan Disputations (either 3.41 or 3.18 depending on the numbering) where Epicurus is quoted as unable to find any good outside of taste, music, figures in motion etc. In some translations ‘sex’ is in there as well but in others it is absent.

I speak no Latin so I wasn’t able to figure out if there was an ambiguity that could legitimately be translated either way? Or if some translations are simply being prudish and inaccurate?

Related, I’ve seen two different section numbering systems for the Disputations. Is that simply due to two different early/influential versions using different methods?

I tried the first two maza recipes in the thread ‘Maza Experiment - Successes? and Failures!’ and found something potentially helpful.

When browning the flour in the pan, keep some raw flour nearby to compare. Without raw flour for reference it’s super hard to tell how much the pan flour is or isn’t browning!

I mixed in the oil and water pretty quickly after taking the pan off the heat and thought the results were pretty alright. Of course I may have benefited from rather low expectations!

Is there a collection of short answer questions, kinda like the quizzes but more open ended? (Obviously these would not be gradeable like multiple choice)

Or put another way: a collection of questions to ponder/consider while one studies Epicurus?

Is there a discussion anywhere about the mode in which the letters were composed?

To elaborate, my understanding is that letters at the time would be written as a normal letter or a ‘letter’ really intended for a broader audience distribution, copying, etc

I already have a copy of AA Long and DN Sedleys The Hellenistic Philosophers, is that a resource people have found to be of any value?
