  • Where Is Epicurus In The "School of Athens"?

    • August 6, 2020 at 3:33 AM

I don't think the bust of Epicurus preserved in the Capitoline Museums in Rome and other busts scattered throughout south Europe have ever disappeared.

Obviously when Raphael painted the School of Athens there were no cameras, and very few people knew Greek to be able to read the name of Epicurus on his bust.

But above all for Raphael it was not important that the appearance of Epicurus was real, the figure he painted had to embody the (wrong) idea that at the time there was of Epicurus.

    • February 17, 2020 at 11:13 AM

netoip-1-660x229.jpgThanks to the generosity and love for culture of NetoIP (Italian telephone operator), here the first prize dedicated to Epicurus is born.

The best master's or doctoral thesis, in Italian or English, will be awarded with € 1,500.

With this award, the World Cultural Association of Epicurus, co-organizer of the award together with NetoIP, intends to thank all those who study the ancient texts, the papyri, the archaeological excavations, the fragments, the testimonies, to give us back an authentic Epicurus. Only thanks to their studies does everything we do by divulging and updating Epicurus' thought make sense.

The winner will be invited to present his work - and to collect the prize - during the Second Epicurean Festival in Senigallia (Italy) from 22 to 26 July 2020.

Here you can download the announcement in Italian and English.

  • Avowed Enemies of Epicurus: Dante

    • February 12, 2020 at 1:21 PM

As an Italian and an Epicurean I'm happy that Epicurus name is into the "Divina Commedia". Is one of the most beautiful poem of ever. Unfortunatly Dante do not know much about Epicurus.

    Those are Dante's words:
Suo cimitero da questa parte hanno

    con Epicuro tutti suoi seguaci,

che l’anima col corpo morta fanno.

    My horrible translation:
Here the groves of Epicurus and his followers, they think the soul will die with the body.

Dante do not know almost anything about Epicurus.
In his journey in the Hell he met epicureans like everybody born before Christ.

I would be very interested in your comments on the Francis Wright book.... Maybe your review of it, or something you plan for the intro to the Italian edition? :)

As I told it is an hard and long work. I have a lot of time to think about it. I can ask Hiram if I can translate his work. Or I can write something myself. Or I can ask some italian friends to write something (I'm lazy, and the last one is the easy one :)).

The only think I'm sure about is that I'll write an excuse to readers because I had to translate from English and not from the original greek founded in Ercolano as Francis Wright wrote.

    One or two things more:
I read the Italian version of this wonderful book:
    https://www.amazon.it/Epicurus-Ethic…&s=books&sr=1-6

I met Francesco Verde of La Sapienza University of Rome. He is the most important connoisseur of Epicurus in the Italian university world and not only in Italy. And He will be at "Free as Epicurus" in Senigallia.
    Two of his books:
