Popularizing The Lucretius Today Podcast

  • I spent some time today looking at our entries in the google podcast and (after I finally found it (the apple directory) and the entries look decent but could definitely be improved.

One thing I see is that the Episode listings should not start with my personal intro or the podcast - it is sufficient for them to start with what the episode is about. I will have to go back and correct that at the Spreaker.com home base, and hope that flows back into the Apple and Google listings eventually.

I also would prefer - if possible - to add in the line numbers as we have been doing in the last several episodes recently

We certainly want to do that, at the very least, before trying to move them over into Youtube.

Let's use this thread to discuss any suggestions anyone has about how to improve the listings on the various locations where the podcast appears.

  • It's been wonderful to see how many new members found us through the podcast. You and the panelists are clearly doing great work in filling a particular content void!

I use Castbox as my podcast app (for no particular reason that I can remember now), and the only thing that irks me is that when I finish an episode it jumps next to the lowest (i.e. earliest) unplayed or unfinished episode in the list. Obviously what I want it to do is play the next episode in sequence, moving forward in time. This is possibly something I can change myself, but I can't figure out how.

  • Oh, yes. I probably just searched 'Lucretius' way back whenever, and it came right up.

I originally downloaded it for a podcast called Hello Internet, now sadly defunct, and it says I've listened with the app for nearly 500 hours altogether. So it works just fine, but possibly there are better options?

  • For many years I hopped back and forth between many podcatchers, but in the last couple of years I've finally seen the telephone more as a tool than a toy, and I've settled down. Antennapod seems to do everything I need just fine.

  • Hi Cassius.

It's been a while since I came across this forum, as a consequence of listening to the podcast.

I just want to say that I continue listening every week on my way back home, as well as I keep reading On the nature of things. I'd say I reached 60% of the book and 60% of the podcast, proxy. Slowly but surely.

And here's my perception: I do enjoy it. It's the perfect companion for the book, without doubts.

I do find it very useful, sometimes to clarify concepts. I became familiar with the voices, that's positive. I noticed the participation of new panellists in the latest podcasts. Sometimes I disagree with details, sometimes I wonder what are they talking about? Overall, it makes me think harder about what I am reading, that's the main point.

So thank you Cassius and the panel for the effort, and I appreciate the fact that you don't give up during difficult times.

I am pretty sure there will be more people listening to the podcast in the future.

I can't wait for the breakthrough in youtube!

    Thanks a lot mate.

  • Alex I just want to be sure to let you know how much I (and I am sure the others as well) appreciate your taking the time to make those kind comments. For long stretches I wasn't sure if we had any listeners at all, so to see you and several others post positive comments lately has been most gratifying.

The podcast started out almost as an experiment as much as anything else, because I knew we needed to gain some expertise in formatting and technology to produce a decent podcast.

Over the next couple of months we're closing in on the end of Lucretius, but as far as I am concerned this is just the start of our podcasting efforts. We'll get the existing series transferred over to youtube to expand the audience, and one day we'll move into something by video as well.

Comments like yours certainly help keep us motivated.

  • Just too add in that my experience of the podcast is similar to that of Alex. I use the Android app Pocast Addict. I have posted a positive review of your podcast in the app to encourage others.
